‘Walking the Walk’ to Help Rural India on October 3, 2009

The mission for the Seva group is to encourage all CMB members to participate in and foster personal spiritual growth through service at local, national and global levels and thereby create a strong sense of community. Some of the activities of the CMB Seva group include fielding a Walk-for-Hunger team in 2009 that raised more than $10K, providing monthly service for the Lawrence Daybreak and Lowell Pathfinder soup kitchens and working with organizations in India like the Chinmaya Organization for Rural Development (CORD).

CORD, an India-based non-profit organization, enables the poor to transform their lives through programs driven by them. CORD programs have been remarkably successful and today cover almost 600 villages in Andhra Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Orissa, and Tamil Nadu, providing direct help to over 50,000 villagers. A unique aspect of CORD is that it pursues the “teach 'em to fish” approach by creating social organizations (Mahila Mandals, Yuvathi Groups, Yuva Groups, and Self Help Groups), programs for sustainable income generation by women, natural resource management, and even through strengthening of local self-governance in panchayats. CORD also provides primary healthcare services, rehabilitation of the disabled, and runs an orphanage. CORD has been in operation since 1985 under the leadership of Dr. Kshama Metre, and with the blessings of Gurudev Swami Chinmayananda. Dr. Metre has been recognized with a Padma Shree award in 2008. To learn more about CORD, visit http://cord.org.in/ and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C_D9ylLKKro. To see CORD in action, see “I am Khushi” at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=covztFhcP3M.

CMB invites you for a family-orientated 5K walk (or run) at picturesque Great Brook Farm State Park (Carlisle, MA) on Saturday, October 3, 2009. This 5K (3 mile) walk/run will be a fun event that brings people together, while raising funds for CORD. The event is open to anybody who wants to help rural India at the grass roots level. To sign up for the CORD-India Walk/Run, please send email to “sevacmb@gmail.com,” with "CORD" in the subject line.
